Engineering a Sports Nutrition Brand for Stacks, Subscriptions & Scale
Swolverine sells research-backed sports supplements to athletes and active-lifestyle customers. Supplements are a saturated, claim-heavy category, so the store had to do two things at once: prove the science, and make bundling and subscribing the path of least resistance. It also had to serve DTC shoppers, wholesale buyers, and creators from one storefront.

The Challenge
Sports nutrition is one of the most crowded categories in ecommerce, and almost every competitor makes the same promises. A store that simply lists products competes on price and loses. Swolverine’s differentiator is genuine scientific rigour — research-backed formulations, clinically meaningful doses, third-party testing — but that only matters commercially if the storefront makes it legible in seconds.
The economics also depend on two behaviours the default Shopify experience does nothing to encourage: stacking (buying complementary products together) and subscribing. Both had to be designed into the merchandising rather than bolted on as a discount code.
And the brand serves three audiences from one storefront: DTC athletes, wholesale and retail buyers, and creators in an affiliate programme — each needing a different path without cluttering the others.
Our Approach
Goal-based navigation
Athletes shop by outcome, not ingredient. We structured navigation around goals — build strength, lose body fat, energy and focus, gut health, hormone support, sleep — alongside a conventional type-based path, so both the informed and the uncertain find their way.
Stacking as a first-class product
Bundles built as genuine products (Build, Body Recomp, Post Cycle, Wellness) with tiered savings, turning a single-product purchase into a considered regimen and lifting average order value structurally rather than through discounting.
Subscriptions layered onto stacks
Subscribe-and-save presented at the product and stack level, compounding with bundle savings. Consumable supplements repurchase predictably, so making subscription the obvious choice converts one-time buyers into recurring revenue.
Science as the trust architecture
Research backing, proven dosing, and third-party testing surfaced as core storefront modules, supported by a substantial research-led content library — because in a claim-heavy category, evidence is the only real differentiator.
Tools that earn traffic
Macro, BMR, and TDEE calculators built as free on-site tools — genuinely useful to athletes, and the kind of resource that attracts search traffic and links a product page never will.
Three audiences, three lanes
A wholesale application and B2B portal, a creator/affiliate programme, and the DTC storefront each given their own path, so a retail buyer and an athlete never collide in the same journey.

The Outcome
The store now sells the way the brand actually differentiates. Evidence — research, dosing, third-party testing — is structural rather than decorative, which is the only durable position in a category where everyone claims the same outcomes.
Stacking and subscribing are designed into the merchandising rather than bolted on, so average order value and recurring revenue are lifted by architecture instead of perpetual discounting. That is the difference between a supplement brand with a business and one renting customers from paid ads.
The calculators quietly do disproportionate work: genuinely useful free tools attract the search traffic and links that product pages cannot, while putting the brand in front of exactly the athletes it wants.

The service behind this build
Goal-based navigation, stack bundling, and subscription-first merchandising are conversion engineering — built into the store, not layered on after.

How do you sell supplements in such a saturated category?
By making the actual differentiator legible in seconds. Almost every supplement brand promises the same outcomes, so a store that just lists products competes on price and loses. Here the rigour — research backing, clinically meaningful doses, third-party testing — is built into the storefront as structural trust modules and a research-led content library, not buried in an about page.
Why build stacking and bundling as products?
Because it changes the economics without discounting. A customer buying one product is a transaction; a customer buying a regimen is a relationship. Building stacks as genuine products with tiered savings raises average order value structurally, and when subscription layers on top, a single purchase becomes predictable recurring revenue.
Why build free calculators into a supplement store?
Because they earn what product pages cannot. Macro, BMR, and TDEE calculators are genuinely useful to the exact athletes the brand wants, and useful free tools attract search traffic and backlinks that commercial pages rarely do. It is one of the most underrated growth assets available to a DTC brand.
How do you serve DTC and wholesale from one store?
By giving each audience its own lane. A retail buyer applying for wholesale terms and an athlete buying a tub of protein need completely different journeys. We built the wholesale application and B2B portal alongside the DTC storefront and creator programme, so each path is purpose-built without cluttering the others.
