Building a Golf Brand Store for Performance, Personalization & Licensing

Volvik has spent over forty years pushing golf ball design forward, from the first matte-finish ball to a range spanning tour-level urethane to night-glow. The store had to make a technically complex product line selectable by real golfers, run licensed collaboration collections alongside core performance products, and support both personalization and a national dealer network.

The Challenge

Golf balls look identical to a layman and matter enormously to a golfer. Volvik’s range spans tour urethane, premium color, 360-degree alignment, color performance, night glow, non-conforming, and ladies’ lines — a taxonomy that means everything to the right buyer and is impenetrable to everyone else. The store had to serve both.

On top of the core range sit licensed collaboration collections with major entertainment franchises, each with its own sub-collections and gift sets. These are a genuine revenue driver and a merchandising problem: they must be discoverable without burying the performance products the brand is actually built on.

The business also runs on two channels — direct sales and a national dealer network — plus personalization, a wholesale portal, charity editions, and limited drops. All of it had to coexist without the storefront becoming a maze.

Our Approach

Taxonomy by performance characteristic

Balls organised by what actually differentiates them — tour urethane, premium color, alignment, night glow, non-conforming — so a serious golfer navigates by the property they care about rather than scrolling an undifferentiated grid.

A comparison tool for the undecided

A dedicated compare page, because the honest truth is that most golfers cannot tell these products apart from a product page alone. Removing that uncertainty is the single biggest conversion lever in technical equipment.

Licensed collections as parallel architecture

Collaboration ranges given their own navigation with character-level sub-collections and gift sets, so they capture gift-driven demand at full strength without displacing the performance range that defines the brand.

Personalization as a conversion driver

Custom golf ball personalization — names, initials, logos — built as a prominent path. Personalized products carry higher margin, near-zero return rates, and emotional value that commodity balls cannot match.

Bridging DTC and the dealer network

A store locator and dealer finder alongside the direct storefront, plus a B2B portal, so the online channel supports rather than competes with the retail network the brand depends on.

Bundles, drops and cause campaigns

Bundle products with tiered savings, limited and seasonal editions, and charity collections — each built as durable merchandising structures the team can run repeatedly without a developer.

The Outcome

The range is finally navigable by the people who care. A golfer looking for tour-level urethane or 360-degree alignment reaches it by the property they actually care about, and the comparison tool catches everyone else — which is most buyers, since these products are genuinely hard to tell apart.

Licensed collections run as a parallel architecture rather than an intrusion. Gift-driven demand converts at full strength while the performance range that defines a forty-year brand keeps its own clear space.

Personalization and the dealer locator do the quiet commercial work: personalized products carry higher margin and almost no returns, and the locator means the online store strengthens the retail network instead of cannibalising it.

Project FAQs

How do you merchandise a technically complex product range?

By organising around the properties that actually differentiate products, not marketing categories. Volvik’s balls split across tour urethane, premium color, alignment, night glow, and non-conforming — distinctions that mean everything to a serious golfer. Structuring navigation that way lets informed buyers self-serve, while a comparison tool catches everyone else.

Why does a comparison tool matter so much here?

Because most golfers genuinely cannot tell these products apart from a product page alone, and uncertainty is what stops a purchase. A comparison page that puts the differences side by side removes the single biggest source of hesitation in technical equipment — which makes it one of the highest-leverage pages on the whole store.

How do licensed collaboration collections fit alongside core products?

As parallel architecture with their own navigation and sub-collections. They serve a different buyer — often gift-driven rather than performance-driven — so they need their own discovery path. Done well, they capture that demand at full strength without burying the performance range the brand is actually built on.

Does an online store compete with a dealer network?

Only if you build it that way. Integrating a store locator and dealer finder into the storefront means online discovery routes buyers to retail partners as well as to checkout, so the channel strengthens the network rather than undercutting it. For brands that depend on retail relationships, that architecture is essential.
